Magic: The Gathering owner Wizards of the Coast fails to recognize workers' union
United Wizards of the Coast–CWA

Wizards of the Coast and parent company Hasbro have failed to recognize a Communication Workers of America-backed union formed by Magic: The Gathering Arena developers by the deadline last week.

The details:

  • The United Wizards of the Coast–CWA union, representing more than 100 MTG Arena designers, programmers, producers, and artists, approached Wizards of the Coast management requesting that it officially recognize the union by May 1, 2026.
  • However, in an open letter published after the deadline passed, union organizers said their request “was met with silence,” stating that “that deadline has now come and gone, with no direct response from the company.” Despite the company’s silence towards the group, it has issued a statement to media outlets such as Kotaku, where it confirmed that it has received the filing and “will respond through the appropriate process."
  • UWOTC—CWA is now asking supporters to continue pressuring the company, with over 30,000 people having signed a petition calling for the union’s recognition. "While we're disappointed in this delay, together we remain strong in our convictions,” the union said. “We look forward to sitting down at the bargaining table so we can make Arena better for workers, for Wizards, and for our players."
