Square Enix and Disney used D23 to deliver the biggest Kingdom Hearts update in years: a late 2027 launch window for Kingdom Hearts 4, the first confirmed Disney world, a greenlit anime series, and a personal appearance from series creator Tetsuya Nomura to shut down delay speculation before it could take hold.

The details:

  • Kingdom Hearts 4 is confirmed for late 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. It is the first concrete release window attached to the game since its initial announcement in 2022.
  • Pixar's Coco is the first confirmed Disney world in the sequel. Benjamin Bratt reprises his role as Ernesto de la Cruz.
  • A Kingdom Hearts anime series has been greenlit for Disney Channel and Disney+, developed in partnership with Nomura and the team at Square Enix. No release date was given.
  • Addressing immediate fan scepticism about the 2027 window, Nomura appeared on stage at a D23 panel and said: "I just wanted to set the record straight. That is not happening." Co-director Tai Yasue added: "I can confidently say and promise that it will launch in 2027. Schedule-wise, the development is very smooth. It's not like an 80%, 90% thing. It's a 100% thing."
