It has been claimed that a remake of Halo: Combat Evolved is in development at Virtuos-owned studio Abstraction Games and will use a hybrid of the original game’s engine and Unreal Engine 5.

The details:

  • According to Halo content creator Mr. Rebs and XboxEra, sources have claimed that a remake of 2001’s Halo: Combat Evolved is now in development at Abstraction Games, with the assistance of Halo Studios. It’s said that the game is being developed in a similar manner to Virtuos’ recent remaster of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which uses the original Gamebryo engine for its gameplay and Unreal Engine 5 for its visuals.
  • According to Mr. Rebs, several popular Halo content creators, such as MintBlitz, are aware of the remake, and the developer has focused on hiring those with knowledge of older Halo engines, such as modders.
  • It’s believed that the game will likely be announced at the Halo World Championships, which will be held from October 24 to 26. During the event, Halo Studios will be sharing more about its upcoming titles, all of which are being built using UE5.
  • Rumors and reports of a Halo: CE remaster have been circulating for years, with The Verge claiming that the title was in early development and codenamed "Project Latitude" last year. It’s been said that the project may only cover the single-player campaign of the original with no multiplayer mode and could be the first time that the legendary FPS series makes its way to PlayStation.
