G4 ceasing operations less than a year after relaunch

American gaming-focused television and digital network G4 is ceasing operations less than a year after being revived.

The history: G4 is closing down... for a second time.

• G4 first launched in the first half of 2002 as a joint venture between NBCUniversal and Dish Network and first closed its doors at the end of 2014.
• Its revival from Comcast Spectacor was announced in July 2020 and it officially returned in November 2021, retaining its emphasis on gaming and nerd culture.
• Its parent company also owns Overwatch League franchise Philadelphia Fusion, part of esports organization T1, NHL franchise Philadelphia Flyers, and NLL franchise Philadelphia Wings.

The closure: Some staff found out they'd lost their jobs via Twitter.

• Comcast Spectacor CEO Dave Scott had written a memo that was to be sent to all employees informing them of G4's closure, though it was obtained by Deadline prematurely.
• The reported memo explains that, despite significant investment and efforts to revive the brand, it just didn't land well enough with gaming fans and thus the parent company is pulling the plug.
• G4 had already been hit with layoffs in recent weeks and now "a few dozen" employees and contractors are set to be impacted by this total closure.
• "Over the past several months, we worked hard to generate that interest in G4, but viewership is low and the network has not achieved sustainable financial results," said Scott in the memo, according to Deadline.
