Hideki Sato, the former longtime Sega veteran referred to as the “father of Sega hardware,” has died aged 77.

The details:

  • As reported by Japanese gaming magazine Beep21, Sato passed away on Thursday, February 13, from an undisclosed cause. “Known as the ‘Father of Sega Hardware,’ Mr. Hideki Sato passed away yesterday,” Beep21 wrote on X. “He was truly a great figure who shaped Japanese gaming history and captivated Sega fans all around the world. The excitement and pioneering spirit of that era will remain forever in the hearts and memories of countless fans, for all eternity. Rest in peace. Our deepest condolences.”
  • Originally joining Sega in 1971, Sato would go on to lead the company’s R&D division, where he and his team designed hardware ranging from its iconic arcade machines to its home consoles. This includes the likes of the SG-1000, the company’s first home console, the Mega Drive/Genesis, and its final system, the Dreamcast, with several of his team’s decisions, such as making the Mega Drive feature “16-BIT” in gold lettering, becoming iconic in the years following.
  • Sato later became the Japanese gaming giant’s acting president in the early 2000s before going on to leave the company in 2008. In an interview with Famitsu (via shmupulations), he looked back on his time at Sega fondly, sharing some of the impressive developments and marketing decisions that Sega had made during its golden years.
