Amazon's Like A Dragon: Yakuza TV series will arrive later this year
Amazon is working on a TV show based on Sega's Like A Dragon (formerly known as Yakuza in the West) game series, which will arrive later this year.
The details:
As reported by Variety, Like a Dragon: Yakuza will consist of six episodes and is being produced in Japan. The show is being directed by Masaharu Take, with actor and model Ryoma Takeuchi starring as beloved protagonist Kiryu Kazuma.
It is unclear whether the series is directly based on any of the games, but it is set in 1995 and 2005, implying that it may be connected to the original 2005 game. Variety also states that the show will follow “the life, childhood friends and the repercussions of the decisions of a fearsome and peerless Yakuza warrior with a strong sense of justice, duty, and humanity”.
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio studio head Masayoshi Yokoyama will also serve as the show’s executive producer. "Since the day I first put pen to paper on the original Yakuza's script, I've never once thought about revisiting any of my work on the series," said the studio head. "It's because I understand all too well the challenges and hardships that come with remaking a finished title. However, if I were ever sent to the past through some kind of cosmic joke, this is the experience I'd want to create."
The first three episodes of Like A Dragon: Yakuza will be released on October 25, followed by the final three on November 1, exclusively on Prime Video. Viewers will be able to choose between watching the original Japanese-language version with subtitles or with dubbed voiceovers.
