The details:

  • World's Edge creative director Adam Isgreen confirmed on LinkedIn that he is among those let go, with just under half the team cut in yesterday's restructuring. Isgreen had hinted at "intriguing plans" for upcoming projects, but the status of those plans is now uncertain. A senior software engineer at the studio separately confirmed that its next game project has been cancelled.
  • Founded in Redmond in 2019 with a specific mandate — to be the permanent custodian of Age of Empires after a decade of the franchise being passed between contractors — World's Edge does not develop games itself. It sets creative direction and oversees the external studios that do: Forgotten Empires handled the Definitive Editions, Relic Entertainment built Age of Empires IV, and Tantalus Media and Forgotten Empires collaborated on Age of Mythology: Retold.
  • The studio's track record is strong. Under its stewardship, the franchise released four major titles between 2019 and 2024, expanded onto Xbox consoles and PlayStation 5, and landed a macOS release as recently as May this year.
  • World's Edge joins Rare in being shifted out of Xbox Game Studios proper and into the Activision umbrella — the same publishing arm that has just been handed stewardship of Halo. The wider Xbox reset has also seen Obsidian moved under Bethesda, Turn 10 absorbed into Playground Games, and Ninja Theory apparently heading for closure. Microsoft says the layoffs are now roughly 75% complete following July's announcement of 3,200 reductions across fiscal 2027.
  • Since World's Edge oversees external developers rather than building games in-house, Age of Empires titles could theoretically continue under new management — though with an unannounced project cancelled and the team halved, the franchise's near-term roadmap is unclear.
