Age of Empires support studio CaptureAge reportedly hit with layoffs

It has been reported that CaptureAge, the studio best known for creating official DLC content for the “Age of” series, is undergoing a round of layoffs, affecting an unknown number of employees.

The details:

  • As spotted by Reddit user “cuc_AOE,” two key level designers at CaptureAge, Alexis Theriault and “Alkhalim,” have been let go, despite working on designing campaigns for the ongoing “Chronicles” series of DLC for Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition. "I am saddened to announce that as of today I am not employed by CaptureAge anymore,” Alkhalim wrote on X. “Layoffs are brutal and even a banger like 'Battle for Greece' does not keep you safe it seems. Loved my time at CA though, only wishing the best to the team and company, you rock!”
  • The level design duo are not the only employees to be let go, with cuts reported across CaptureAge’s QA and engineering teams, even impacting team leaders. The studio has yet to publicly confirm the layoffs, and it is currently unknown how many employees were affected in total.
  • Production on the second part of the Chronicles DLC appears to have begun late last year, with the intention of releasing it by the end of 2025. However, with job cuts at CaptureAge and major layoffs at AoE owner Microsoft, it is possible that future projects will be cancelled entirely, with fewer resources allocated to the iconic strategy franchise moving forward.
