Elon Musk has stated that his xAI “game studio” will be capable of generating playable video games using AI by the end of 2026.

The details:

  • Earlier this week, one X user posted a short AI-generated video depicting what resembles a modern military first-person shooter game along with the bold claim that “video games will be dynamically generated by Grok in the future.” In response to the post, X owner Elon Musk has stated that the “XAI game studio will release a great AI-generated game before the end of next year.”
  • Musk announced the creation of the game studio back in February during a livestream in which he encouraged anyone interested in making AI-generated video games to join xAI.
  • xAI has made some impressive developments in AI in recent years, continuously updating Grok, X’s popular chatbot, with new tools and improvements. Most notably, this includes Aurora, a model that allows Grok to generate images from text prompts, and Imagine, which can generate short video clips alongside audio.
  • X is not the only company experimenting with AI gaming, as Microsoft unveiled a “playable” version of Quake 2 generated by its Muse AI model back in April. Unsurprisingly, the gameplay experience was quite poor, and the overall project was met with widespread backlash from the gaming community. Despite this, generative AI is still growing in popularity among game studios, with over 50% of Japanese developers reportedly using the tech.
