The classic SNES RPG is receiving a fresh coat of paint for a Nintendo Switch re-release on November 17.
The details:
- A two-minute trailer showing off the remake's brand new graphics was shown off during the most recent Nintendo Direct, revealing how Nintendo and Square Enix managed to translate the original's old-school 16-bit graphics to a modern style. The game's isometric perspective and gameplay mechanics appear to have remained unchanged, as does the story. A detailed comparison of the art styles in the two versions from GameXplain can be found here.
- Legendary composer Yoko Shimomura has also confirmed that she will once again be in charge of the game's musical score. The soundtrack will include rearranged versions of her original tracks from 27 years ago, and she hopes that "both fans of the original and those playing for the first time can enjoy it." Shimomura's subsequent work includes soundtracks for Final Fantasy XV, Mario & Luigi, and the Kingdom Hearts series.
- Many fans have speculated whether or not we'll see any more remakes of classic SNES era titles shortly, with many hoping for Square Enix's beloved RPG Chrono Trigger or the cult classic EarthBound (known as Mother 2 in Japan), which could also lead to the re-release of the original Mother (EarthBound Beginnings) and 3.
Other upcoming games:
- Immortals of Aveum, a new fantasy shooter IP, has been pushed back from its original July release date to August. According to Ascendant Studios, the extra few weeks of development will allow it to "further polish the game, finish optimizing all platforms, and deliver a strong launch."
- Diablo IV may have surpassed Diablo Immortal's annual revenue figures within a week of its release, earning $666 million versus $525 million. Since its release in 2018, the free-to-play mobile game has been plagued by controversy, including its heavy reliance on microtransactions.
