1047 Games has announced that it is "unlaunching" its latest FPS, Splitgate 2, due to low player numbers and negative feedback, and that it is conducting a round of layoffs affecting an unknown number of employees.

The details:

  • In a post to Reddit, studio founders Ian Proulx and Nicholas Bagamian confirmed that the game will pushed back to beta the game back into beta following mixed reception and a large decline in player count since its June launch. “We launched too early,” the statement reads. “We had ambitious goals with Splitgate 2, and in our excitement to share it with you, we bit off more than we could chew. We rushed certain features, made some boneheaded mistakes, and most importantly—we didn’t give you the polished, portal-filled mayhem you fell in love with.”
  • 1047 Games has confirmed that it will remain playable going forward and that its third chapter, alongside some much-needed fixes, will still be released. Several planned changes for the re-launch of the game include simplified monetization, reworked progression, and a strong focus on classic game modes and gameplay involving portals.
  • However, the developer has stated that the servers for the original Splitgate will be shut down within the next month, with the studio exploring potential peer-to-peer and offline modes to keep the game playable.
  • Unfortunately, the studio has also shared that the decision comes alongside another round of layoffs, with IGN reporting that it will affect 45 employees. This is the second round of cuts at the studio this year after it let go of a "small group of valued staff" shortly after Splitgate 2’s launch last month. “This is heartbreaking,” the founders wrote. “These are our teammates and our friends, and they helped build what we have today. They’re receiving severance and job placement support, and we’re committed to doing everything we can to help them through this transition. We hope to bring them back when we can.”
