Sega has announced that its β€œSuper Game” project has been cancelled but confirmed that its reboots of classic IPs such as Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, and Golden Axe are still in the works.

The details:

  • Back in 2021, Sega announced that it was working on a Super Game project, which would span several AAA titles and potentially incorporate technologies such as user-generated content, cloud gaming and NFTs. At the time, the company stated that it could invest up to around $882 million USD into R&D for the project, but little was shared about its status over the next five years.
  • Now, in its latest financial results, Sega has confirmed that the Super Game project has been scrapped at no additional cost. The decision came after the disappointing performance of free-to-play games, especially those from the likes of Angry Birds developer and subsidiary Rovio, leading the company to shift its priorities.
  • Over 100 developers that were working on free-to-play games at Sega have now been transferred to other projects, with the company still working on reboots of classic franchises. The presentation confirmed that new games in the Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, and Crazy Taxi franchises are still in development, with the next Virtua Fighter title expected to launch prior to the end of March 2027.
