Square Enix has announced that its 4v4 party shooter Foamstars will receive only one more season of content, but will remain online following its transition to free-to-play earlier this year.

The details:

  • Square Enix confirmed in a post on the game's website that the Party Goes On season, which begins on December 13, will be the title's final season of new content. However, once the season ends on January 17, the developer will open up older Season Passes for players to claim any missed rewards, though they will still need to pay for the premium passes to obtain all items.

  • The next update will also include “ability to customize shots of each character, and new enhancement elements, such as Prism Gems,” to ensure that players can "continue to enjoy the game for the foreseeable future." Square Enix also intends to host the "Foamstar Cup," which will include events themed around each of its characters.

  • Game producer Kosuke Okatani also thanked fans and reiterated that the game will not be shut down anytime soon, stating that he hopes that fans "will continue to enjoy Foamstars for many years to come." “Throughout both the development and operational phases, we have faced many challenges,” Okatani wrote. “However, the support of all of you who play the game, along with the incredible fan art, has been a constant source of encouragement for the team. It’s because of this support that we’ve been able to overcome these difficulties, always with the goal of responding to your feedback.”

  • Foamstars was released in February 2024, but Square Enix claims it underperformed commercially, blaming the game for its inadequate financial results alongside Final Fantasy XVI and VII Rebirth. After failing to attract new players throughout the year, the game became free-to-play for all PlayStation users in October, with no PS Plus required to play online.
