PlatinumGames acquires The Wonderful 101 trademark from Nintendo
PlatinumGames has successfully acquired the trademark for Nintendo's cult action-adventure title The Wonderful 101, more than a decade after its original release.
The details:
As spotted by Reddit user Joseki100, the document, sent to the United States Patent and Trademark Office on August 19, confirms that the trademark has been successfully transferred to the Japanese developer from Nintendo as of September 9.
Rumors of Platinum owning the trademark began to circulate in 2020, following the release of a remaster of the game. However, then-vice president Hideki Kamiya later confirmed that it only owned rights to the remaster and its spin-off, The Wonderful One. “We cannot disclose details of the contract since another company is involved, but PlatinumGames holds the copyright for The Wonderful 101: Remastered and The Wonderful One: After School Hero,” Kamiya told VGC in an interview. “That’s all we can say.”
The Wonderful 101 was first released for the Wii U in 2013, and despite receiving positive reviews, it sold poorly on an already struggling platform. It has since gained a loyal fan base, and both Kamiya, the game's director, and producer Atsushi Inaba have expressed interest in creating a sequel, though the former has since left Platinum.
