Obsidian has shared more details about its upcoming RPG, Avowed, confirming that the game can be played entirely in first- or third-person.

The details:

  • During a special "Deep Dive" episode of the Xbox Podcast, the studio revealed new gameplay and information about the RPG. This included further details about its combat system, which includes both melee and ranged attacks, dual-wielding, and has been improved since the previous trailer with more visual feedback when hitting a target.

  • Obsidian also confirmed that players can choose whether to play in first or third person, a feature found in other RPGs such as the Fallout and Elder Scrolls series but noticeably absent from The Outer Worlds. The official Avowed X account also posted “Third. Person. Gameplay,” which was met with praise from the community.

  • Small snippets of the dialogue system were also shown, with players given a variety of options, some of which featured icons likely related to some form of personality system. Avowed’s skill and attribute system was also shown off, consisting of five attributes and five skill trees that consist of multiple tiers.

  • Although no release date for Avowed has been officially announced outside of the 2024 window, Obsidian may have leaked it during the Xbox Game Showcase. Fans noticed that a now-edited blog post stated that the developer was "getting it ready for release on 12th November, 2024."
