Supermassive acquired by Nordisk Games

Supermassive Games, the British game developer behind the popular horror title The Quarry, has been acquired by Nordisk Games.

The acquisition: It's the latest in a long line of acquisitions in the games industry in 2022.

  • The financial terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed.
  • Nordisk Games previously acquired 30.7% of Supermassive in 2021, adding a developer from the UK to its portfolio for the first time.
  • Now, Supermassive joins Avalanche Studios, Flashbulb, Kogama, MercurySteam, Nitro Games, and Star Stable Entertainment under Nordisk ownership.
  • At the time of publication, Supermassive Gamers has 18 roles listed on Hitmarker. The developer is searching for Game Producers, Animators, Artists, and Testers, among other roles.

The landscape: A lot of money has already traded hands in 2022.

  • From Microsoft looking to acquire Activision Blizzard to Sony snapping up Bungie, this year is the biggest ever for acquisitions in the industry.
  • It was only on July 11 that PlayStation announced that it had closed on its acquisition of Haven Studios as it looks to create new IP and have a significant presence in the live games services space.
  • The economy is in a shaky state, to put it politely, and smaller studios will no doubt run into some obstacles in the name of survival. While plenty of major acquisitions have taken place so far, it wouldn't be surprising to see this trend continue among smaller, independent studios too.
