Midnight Society cuts ties with co-founder Dr Disrespect following Twitch ban allegations
Update: Beahm has now issued a statement confirming that he had "casual, mutual conversations that sometimes leaned too much in the direction of being inappropriate" with a minor in 2017, but states that there were no "real intentions" behind the messages and that "no crimes were committed."
Midnight Society, the developer of upcoming FPS Deadrop co-founded by Guy "Dr Disrespect" Beahm, has announced that it has severed ties with the streamer following allegations that he inappropriately messaged a minor on Twitch.
The details:
In 2020, Beahm was unexpectedly banned from Twitch, and his two-year exclusivity contract with the livestreaming platform was also terminated after just a year. Twitch never revealed the reason for the ban, and the two parties settled their legal dispute in 2021 after Beahm threatened to sue the service, claiming no wrongdoing on either side.
Almost four years later, Cody Conners, former account director of strategic partnerships at Twitch, claimed on X that someone had “got banned because [he] got caught sexting a minor in the then existing Twitch whispers product. He was trying to meet up with her at TwitchCon. The powers that be could read in plain text.” Although Beahm was not named in the post, many made the connection, and The Verge corroborated the allegations in a report after speaking with two former Twitch employees.
Midnight Society, a development studio which was co-founded by Beahm and former Call of Duty community manager Robert Bowling in 2021, has now issued a statement confirming the termination of its relationship with Beahm. "On Friday evening we became aware of an allegation against one of our co-founders Guy Beahm aka Dr Disrespect", the studio wrote. "We assumed his innocence and began speaking with parties involved. And in order to maintain our principles and standards as a studio and individuals, we needed to act. For this reason, we are terminating our relationship with Guy Beahm immediately.”
Beahm has repeatedly denied the allegations, claiming that the situation had been resolved, that no illegal activity had occurred, and that "no wrongdoing was acknowledged, and they paid out the whole contract." Toward the end of a recent livestream, Beahm stated that he may "step away" from everything in the near future.
