Marathon is getting a new PvE-only mode, a PvE-with-“a light touch of PvP” mode, and a multi-season roadmap of free seasonal updates as Bungie tries to broaden the extraction shooter’s audience going forward.

The details:

  • In a new blog post on X, game director Joe Ziegler confirmed that Season 2 will introduce two experimental modes: one early in the season that focuses on PvE but with a “light touch of PvP,” and another later in the season that is strictly PvE, giving players the opportunity to progress its quests and story without being attacked by others.
  • Ziegler stated that Bungie aims to offer “more survival experiences for different moods,” as Marathon can currently only be played in PvP. However, he stressed that the studio will continue to support PvP in the game, adding that it is planning to explore the introduction of a PvP-focused mode later down the line.
  • Season 2, titled Nightfall and launching June 2, will also introduce the new Night Marsh zone, the Sentinel runner shell, the Cradle progression system, a rotating Duos queue, expanded vault size, new weapons, and other quality-of-life changes.
  • Bungie has also shared its plans beyond Season 2, with Season 3 bringing “a lot” of revisions to the early game experience and the Perimeter map. Meanwhile, Season 4 will introduce further depth into the existing extraction loop, and Season 5 will “bring the whole ecosystem of (PV(P)VE) play together.”
