New details have emerged on the scale and leadership impact of Bungie's latest layoffs, with the studio's head confirmed to be departing and the official job loss figure now standing at 292.

The details:

  • The State of Washington has officially confirmed 292 full-time Bungie employees have been laid off - a figure representing approximately 35% of the studio's workforce, which is believed to have stood at around 850 prior to the cuts. This is lower than the 400 figure cited in initial reports.
  • Studio head Justin Truman is stepping down in the wake of the layoffs, according to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier. Truman had only taken the role last year following the departure of Pete Parsons. He will be replaced by Poria Torkan, an 11-year Bungie veteran who most recently served as VP of Operations.
  • Sony Interactive Entertainment posted a formal update from PlayStation Studios confirming the restructuring, framing it as a refocus of the studio on Marathon, with Sony committing to support Bungie through the game's launch and its first two seasons of content updates.
  • The cuts primarily affect the Destiny team, with some Marathon team members also impacted alongside SIE staff who supported Bungie's operations. Destiny 3 remains off the table, with any future projects beyond Marathon still described as being in "early incubation."
  • This is the third round of layoffs at Bungie since Sony's $3.6 billion acquisition, and follows Sony reporting a $765 million impairment loss on Bungie assets.
