Rockstar has confirmed that the physical edition of Grand Theft Auto 6 will not include a disc, shipping instead as a code in a box - a decision that has prompted backlash from fans and at least two retailers who say they will not carry the game.

The details:

  • The physical release of GTA 6 for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S will consist of a box containing a digital download code rather than a disc. Pre-load is expected to become available from November 12, ahead of the game's November 19 launch.
  • The decision is widely seen as benefiting Take-Two financially by eliminating the used game market for the title, as discs can be resold via retailers like GameStop without the publisher receiving a cut, while download codes can only be used once.
  • Rockstar has not commented on the backlash or indicated whether a disc version is planned for a later date. However, insider Graczdari (via PPE.pl) has claimed that the download codes will only be used for the first production run, with an official disc release arriving later in order to combat leaks.
