Marathon is "on track," but gameplay is not ready to be revealed just yet, Bungie says
Bungie has confirmed that development of its Marathon reboot is progressing well, but it is still "a little early to show" any gameplay of the extraction shooter.
The details:
In Marathon's first official development update, released on Monday, game director Joe Ziegler revealed some minor details about the gameplay loop. Players will be tasked with completing a variety of quests, finding loot to upgrade their abilities, and then extracting to secure the rewards. It was also confirmed that each of its playable characters, dubbed "runners," have a "small subset" of unique abilities, with additional customization available through various pieces of gear.
While Ziegler explained that gameplay was not yet ready to be shown, he confirmed that the game's development is "on track" and that "a lot more" would be revealed next year. Bungie has also released two new pieces of concept art depicting two runners codenamed "Thief" and "Stealth," and Ziegler confirmed that the studio intends to expand its playtesting opportunities.
Marathon was announced last year as a reboot of Bungie's pre-Halo IP, with the same lore but evolving the series of shooters into a PvP extraction FPS. Chris Barrett originally led the project until he was accused of inappropriate behavior by a number of female employees, after which Ziegler, a former VALORANT director, began overseeing its development.
