Avalanche Software’s Hogwarts Legacy has been highly successful, with the game cementing itself as the sixth fastest-selling title in the six-year history of Games Sales Data’s (GSD) European Charts.
The details:
- According to gamesindustry.biz, GSD's European charts show Hogwarts Legacy in sixth place among the fastest-selling games in Europe, only surpassed by EA's soccer franchise, FIFA. In terms of both digital and physical launch sales in the region, the game has now surpassed both Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption 2 and Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (COD: MWII). In addition to the already impressive sales figures, Hogwarts Legacy topped the best-sellers chart for February.
- After only three weeks on the market, Hogwarts Legacy has also become the best-selling game in the past 12 months, only being surpassed by Elden Ring and titles from staple franchises such as FIFA 23, COD: MWII, and Grand Theft Auto V. The game's large sales have still failed to shift the lackluster numbers of video game sales in February 2023, with sales dropping 10% across the board in Europe, even though the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S have sold more units.
- The game's release was marred by controversy due to anti-trans comments made by JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series. Many fans boycotted the game as a result of the situation, with online creators receiving criticism and abuse if they played the game on their Twitch or YouTube channels. According to the charts, the outrage appears to have had little impact on the overall success of the wizard RPG.
Other Hogwarts Legacy news:
- Warner Bros. has announced that the game's last-generation ports will now be released in May 2023, a month later than previously planned. The studio stated that the extra month is needed to "deliver the best possible experience on all platforms," which may indirectly benefit the upcoming Nintendo Switch port in July.
- A prototype for an online co-op mod for the game is already in the works. The mod is "HogWarp," and a series of short videos uploaded to YouTube shows a barebones version of the system working with up to 10 players running around the wizard school and outfits syncing between players in a session together. The mod is still very early in its development, with a single developer working on the project, although more assistance is expected later down the line.
