Supermassive Games is laying off up to 75 employees

Supermassive Games, the UK studio behind Until Dawn, The Quarry, and the Dark Pictures Anthology, has announced a redundancy consultation that could result in the loss of up to 75 employees. It marks the third time the studio has cut staff in under three years, and comes in the wake of CEO Pete Samuels's departure and the modest reception of the studio's most recent release, Directive 8020.

The details:

The studio announced the cuts via X, calling it "a necessary step to help ensure the sustainability of the company" and saying its priority would be to support impacted employees throughout the process.
Directive 8020, a sci-fi horror entry in the Dark Pictures Anthology that launched in May 2026, received mixed reviews and failed to gain significant sales traction. Samuels stepped down as CEO in June, roughly six weeks after launch. The studio has not announced its next project, though a teaser hidden at the end of Directive 8020 hints at something in development.
This follows 90 job cuts in February 2024 and a further redundancy process affecting up to 36 employees in July 2025. Supermassive had around 350 employees as recently as 2023, meaning the studio will have roughly halved in size across these three rounds.
Supermassive was founded in Guildford in 2008 and acquired by Nordisk Games in 2022.
