GOG announces Warcraft 1 & 2 will be preserved even after they're delisted later this month
GOG has confirmed that the original versions of Warcraft 1 and 2 will continue to be playable on modern systems, despite Blizzard's decision to remove the titles from storefronts later this month.
The details:
Following the recent release of the Warcraft 1 and 2 remasters on Battle.net last month, GOG has revealed that Blizzard intends to remove the games from the storefront on December 13. Despite this, the titles are now part of GOG's Preservation Program, which was established to ensure that classic games are always playable on modern systems. As a result, the company has pledged to continue supporting both entries after their delisting.
Since the GOG release of the classic RTS titles, the company has made a number of improvements, including LAN multiplayer support and additional graphics options like antialiasing and anisotropic filtering. If players prefer to purchase the DRM-free copies of Warcraft 1 and 2, a $14.99 bundle will be available until December 13, and using the code "MakeWarcraftLiveForever" will result in a $2 discount.
Both games will remain available on Blizzard's Battle.net as part of the "Battle Chest" bundle, which includes remasters of Warcraft 1, 2, and 3, as well as the original versions of the first two games. It's also worth noting that the remasters for the first two games include the option of switching to the original graphics, allowing players to take advantage of modern quality of life improvements while retaining the charm of the original games.
