Former Rockstar Games developer says Midnight Club 5 was canceled due to internal conflicts

Former Rockstar senior designer Kris Roberts has given the clearest account yet of why Midnight Club 5 never happened in a new interview with Insider Gaming's Kiwi Talkz, describing a combination of missed deadlines and internal politics that left the franchise permanently shelved.

The details:

• Roberts confirmed that after he left the project, the core Midnight Club team continued working and had begun prototyping cities for a fifth entry. London was one of the locations in development. "There was effort, and they were starting Midnight Club 5, or whatever they were going to call it, but it didn't last, and it was canceled," he said.
• A key factor in the cancellation was what Roberts described as "non-trivial conflict" between Rockstar's New York office and the Midnight Club team based in San Diego. Part of this conflict stemmed from legitimate grievances: the San Diego team missed multiple deadlines during development of Midnight Club: Los Angeles, which in the era before digital distribution carried serious financial consequences.
• But Roberts said the cancellation went beyond schedule issues and was rooted in how New York viewed the franchise relative to GTA. "The New York perspective was, 'You're not GTA'. When you're the red-headed stepchild project — you know, we're doing a good job, we're world-class, but we're still treated less than."
• Roberts noted the series held up well against its competition, with data showing players spent more time with Midnight Club than with rival titles like Need for Speed and Burnout. The problem was perception rather than performance. "The perception was we never got the accolades or the reception," he said.
• Once the cancellation was confirmed, the San Diego team was broken up. Some staff transitioned to work on Rockstar's RAGE engine or on Red Dead Redemption. Others were let go entirely.
