Cyberpunk 2077 VR modder removes all mods from Patreon after receiving second DMCA strike

Luke Ross, the creator of the Cyberpunk 2077 VR mod and many more VR mods, has removed all of his projects from Patreon after receiving another DMCA strike, this time from 505 Games, the publisher behind Ghostrunner.

The details:

  • Earlier this week, Ross received a DMCA takedown notice from CD Projekt Red regarding his Cyberpunk 2077 VR mod, which the company claimed violated its fan work policies and infringed on its IP rights because it was placed behind a paid Patreon subscription. The modder defended the monetization of the project and ultimately took down the mod after refusing the studio's request to make it free with optional donations.
  • Now, Ross’ Ghostrunner VR mod has been hit with a similar takedown from publisher 505 Games. In response to the action, he has disabled all versions of his mods on Patreon, and access for new subscribers will not be granted. Meanwhile, those who are currently subscribed will be given an additional month of access for free. Ross reportedly earns approximately $20,000 per month through his Patreon subscription model but now risks losing access to the platform due to continued legal takedowns.
  • In a message to his Patreon subscribers, Ross expressed frustration with DMCA legislation, stating, "The DMCA legislation is crafted in a way that grants enormous authority to large corporations, which merely need to assert on a piece of paper that their copyright has been violated to eliminate anything they disapprove of—all while creating endless difficulties for creators like myself, who are left with the sole option of resorting to the courts and incurring substantial expenses to navigate the legal system."
