BioWare reassures fans that the next Mass Effect is still in active development

Following mounting speculation about the future of the Mass Effect franchise amid EA's impending sale to private investors, BioWare has stepped forward to dispel rumors and confirmed that the next title in the series is still in the works.

The details:

  • Mass Effect executive producer Mike Gamble posted an update on N7 Day acknowledging the concerns fans have raised, stating that despite limited public information over the past two years, active development on the next Mass Effect continues. “The truth is, the last few years have been an incredibly busy time at BioWare,” he wrote. “But currently, the team is heads-down and focused exclusively on Mass Effect. We have a lot of universe to cover, lots of features to build, and lots of romances to figure out. We’re excited by what we’re building, and we promise you: when we’re ready, it’ll be a lot of fun to show.“
  • Beyond the next mainline game, the Mass Effect executive producer confirmed that Amazon's live-action Mass Effect series will be set after the original trilogy's timeline, with a story that won’t cover the same narrative as the games. “The writers room is going strong, and we’ve got a lot figured out about how it fits within the Mass Effect canon, and where it sits in respect to the new game,” Gamble shared. “The show will explore a brand-new story within the universe’s timeline, and will be set after the original trilogy. It won’t be a retread of Commander Shepard’s story – because after all… that’s YOUR story, isn’t it?”
  • The update comes amid EA’s controversial acquisition by a group of private investors, including Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. The deal will see the company sitting $20 billion in debt, which will likely result in job cuts, closures, and project cancellations as the company continues to push towards AI automation.
