Xbox One systems with old firmware are reportedly failing to update
Update: Xbox has confirmed that the issue has been resolved for consoles running firmware dated November 2018 or earlier.
Original article:
It has been reported that older Xbox One models are now failing to update after being unused for an extended period of time, preventing online access.
The details:
As reported by Digital Foundry, NeoGAF users have claimed that launch "VCR" Xbox One consoles cannot be updated if their existing firmware is too old. Digital Foundry has confirmed the reports, stating that it failed to update two consoles running firmware from 2017 and another from 2018, not only by downloading the updates directly but also by attempting to install them via USB drive.
This issue does not appear to affect the Xbox One S or One X, which were released in 2016 and 2017, respectively, regardless of the firmware version they are currently running. Those who have kept the original One up to date in recent years will be able to update as intended.
This may not appear to be a major issue given the platform's age, but it's worth noting that those who factory reset the system will effectively "brick" the console, making it impossible to download the necessary firmware during the initial setup process. Updates are also required to access online features via Xbox Live, which means that players who return to aging systems will be forced to play offline, potentially locking them out of their digital libraries.
