Sony unveils PS5 Pro featuring significant improvements to frame-rate, upscaling, and ray tracing
Sony has finally announced the PS5 Pro after numerous leaks, and the mid-generation refresh includes an overall performance boost, but at an increased price.
The details:
PS5 lead architect Mark Cerny revealed the system at the PS5 Pro Technical Presentation. The PS5 Pro has a larger GPU than the base console, with 67% more Compute Units and 28% faster memory. This allows for 45% faster rendering, enabling the console to achieve higher and more consistent frame rates, as well as improved ray tracing.
The console also incorporates custom machine-learning hardware, allowing for major advances in AI upscaling with the newly introduced PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution technology. Sony demonstrated PSSR in action with Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, both of which saw notable improvements in clarity while maintaining performance.
Another improvement is the addition of "PS5 Pro Game Boost," which "may stabilize or improve the performance" of more than 8,500 PS4 and PS5 games. Some PS4 titles will also be able to use Enhanced Image Quality to improve game resolution.
The PS5 Pro will be available on November 7, 2024 for $700 USD/Β£700, and will include a 2TB SSD, the standard DualSense controller, and Astro's Playroom. As rumored last month, the console will not include a disc drive, meaning those who want to play physical games will instead have to purchase the new detachable disc drive, which was introduced with the PS5 Slim earlier this year.
