Sony has announced that the price of all tiers of its PlayStation Plus subscription service will be considerably higher beginning in September.
The details:
- Sony confirmed that all tiers of the service will now cost more in several regions, along with the announcement of September's free selection of games for Plus subscribers. The base tier, PlayStation Plus Essential, will increase from $59.99 to $79.99 per year in the US. Extra and Premium will also see price increases, rising from $99.99 and $119.99 to $134.99 and $159.99, respectively.
- PlayStation owners are understandably upset about the price increase, with players mocking the September free game lineup, which includes the mediocre Saints Row reboot, Generation Zero, and a decent but PS4 version of MMO Black Desert. Others have pointed out that, ultimately, many players only use the subscription to access multiplayer modes and that Sony is now "ripping off" its playerbase.
- Sony is not the only gaming giant to announce that it will be hiking up the price of its subscription services, with rival Microsoft raising the costs of both its Xbox Series X consoles as well as Xbox Game Pass in most regions back in June.
More gaming news:
- Xbox head Phil Spencer stated that he would "love to find solutions" to the possibility of hundreds of Xbox 360-era titles being lost to time when the Xbox 360 storefront closes in July 2024. Currently, approximately 220 titles will be rendered unplayable following the closure as they have not been ported to other platforms.
- The PlayStation titles MediEvil and Days Gone may be adapted into TV shows or films, according to the PlayStation Productions website, which features the games' protagonists alongside Kratos, Aloy, and Nathan Drake.
