Sony announces another major PS5 price increase in Japan
Sony has confirmed that the PS5 and its official accessories will see their second price increase since launch due to the current economic climate.
The details:
The PS5 will now be priced at ¥79,980 JPY ($550 USD) for the standard model and ¥72,980 JPY ($505) for the digital version as of September 2, according to an update on the Japanese PlayStation Blog. This represents a ¥13,000 ($90) increase from the current prices of ¥66,980 and ¥59,980, respectively.
Accessories such as DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers, PULSE earphones and headsets, the PS VR2, and even the PlayStation Portal will all see price hikes. The standard DualSense controller will now cost ¥11,480 ($80), up from ¥9,480 ($65), with some color variants costing ¥11,980 ($83).
Sony cites fluctuations in the current global economy as the main driving force behind the changes, with the value of the Japanese yen falling sharply since the system's release in 2020. This isn't the first time the console's price has risen in Japan, but it's unclear whether Sony intends to make similar changes in other regions as it has in the past.
