Takashi Iizuka, the head of Sega's Sonic Team, has stated that he would like to create an RPG featuring Sonic the Hedgehog at some point.

The details:

  • Speaking with Good Vibes Gaming ahead of the release of Sonic x Shadow Generations, Iizuka was asked about whether we’d see a Sonic RPG from the developer in the future. "Personally, I really like role-playing games," he said. "The RPG game format is a lot of fun and I've even thought to myself 'you know, for the past 30 years we haven't done a Sonic RPG'. And I'm questioning myself. 'Why haven't we done a Sonic RPG in all this time? How have we gotten to 30 years with no RPGs?' So I’d like to hopefully work on a Sonic RPG at some point before I retire from Sega. But, you know, that’s just a dream right now, there are no concrete plans at this point.”

  • Sonic and his peers previously appeared in an RPG, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, for the Nintendo DS in 2008. However, the game was developed externally by BioWare, the EA-owned studio best known for Mass Effect and Dragon Age.

  • Sonic Team has also worked on RPGs before, creating the first console MMORPG, Phantasy Star Online, for the Dreamcast. Following the game's release, it worked on a second version as well as sequels, Episode III: C.A.R.D. Revolution and Phantasy Star Universe.
