Riot's League of Legends MMO has been "reset" and is years away from a reveal
Riot Games has stated that the direction of its upcoming MMO project has been "reset" and that it will be "going dark for a long time."
The details:
Studio co-founder Marc Merrill provided an update on the project on X, informing fans that it was still in the works after being announced in 2020 but that Riot had gone back to the drawing board. “After a lot of reflection and discussion, we’ve decided to reset the direction of the project some time ago,” he wrote. “This decision wasn’t easy, but it was necessary. The initial vision just wasn’t different enough from what you can play today. We don’t believe you all want an MMO that you’ve played before with a Runeterra coat of paint; to truly do justice to the potential of Runeterra and to meet the incredibly high expectations of players around the world, we need to do something that truly feels like a significant evolution of the genre.”
Merrill went on to say that the "reset" means that fans will most likely have to wait "several years" for any further details about the title in order for the development team to remain focused. "Remember, 'no news is good news,' as it means we're hard at work, pouring our hearts and souls into making something that we hope you'll love," the co-founder wrote.
Fabrice Condominas, former Mass Effect 3 lead producer and Riot production director, has also been brought on as the project's new executive producer. “Excited and humbled to join this incredibly talented team and take on the huge responsibility of leading a game with such high expectations,” Condominas wrote on X. “Developing an MMO is a monumental undertaking, and while I am eager to dive into the work, I am also mindful of the patience and perseverance it will require.“
