Nintendo has officially announced that it will collaborate with Arad Productions on a live-action film based on The Legend of Zelda.

The details:

  • Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo legend and Zelda franchise creator announced the film's production on the company's X account, saying it has been in development for "many years now." An accompanying press release confirmed that Nintendo is collaborating with Arad Productions to create the film, with Miyamoto and former Marvel Entertainment chief creative officer Avi Arad serving as producers.

  • The film is directed by Wes Ball, best known for his trilogy of Maze Runner adaptations, and is co-financed by Sony Pictures Entertainment and Nintendo, with Nintendo covering more than half of the budget.

  • There isn't much information available about its plot and setting yet, but it will most likely feature all of the major characters from the game series, such as Link, Ganondorf, and Princess Zelda, in a brand new story set in Hyrule.

  • With the Super Mario Bros. Movie grossing over $1.3 billion since its release earlier this year, Nintendo was expected to go for another blockbuster hit with its most popular IPs, though it was expected that it would stick with animated films in the future.
