Major announcements from Summer Game Fest 2024
Although not as crazy as Xbox's showcase later in the week, Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest still included several notable reveals, many of which confirmed previous leaks.
Civilization VII
The next mainline entry in the long-running Civilization franchise, Civ 7, will be released in 2025, with PC and console versions available on the same day. The full gameplay reveal for the game will take place in August.
Sonic X Shadow Generations
Sonic X Shadow Generations, an update to 2011's Sonic Generations, will be released on all major platforms on October 25. Sega also confirmed that PlayStation players will have access to exclusive "Extended Prologue Animations with deleted scenes," and that pre-ordering the Digital Deluxe Edition will grant three days of early access to the game.
Lego Horizon Adventures
Guerrilla Games and Studio Gobo are co-developing a new Lego spin-off of Sony's Horizon franchise, which will be released in holiday 2024. Unsurprisingly, the title has a lighter tone than the rest of the franchise's games, and it will be the first to be released on the Nintendo Switch.
Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions
Unbroken Studios has announced that its competitive multiplayer game based on Harry Potter's iconic sport, Quidditch, will be available on all major platforms on September 3. PlayStation Plus subscribers will also have access to the game from day one.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Ritaβs Rewind
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind is in development at Digital Eclipse and will be available on PC and console later this year. The retro-inspired beat 'em up, which can be played solo or with up to three other players, also includes on-rails shooter and driving levels reminiscent of classic arcade games.
New World Aeternum
Amazon's MMORPG New World will be available on consoles on October 15 with the release of the Aeternum overhaul. Aeternum will rework the game's existing content to streamline and expand its quests with new objectives, remove multiplayer requirements by allowing players to recruit NPC followers, add new endgame content, and enable cross-platform play.
Battle Aces
Battle Aces is a deck-building RTS hybrid created by Uncapped Games and Lightspeed Studios, with input from former StarCraft 2 developer David Kim. The game's concept is to "eliminate the tedious clicks required to play an RTS," instead focusing on the "fun" parts, creating a more accessible experience. No release date has been given, but a closed test will take place "very soon."
Blumhouse Games (Multiple Games)
Horror movie production company Blumhouse has announced six games under its video game publishing label. These include Project C, Sleep Awake, The Simulation, Grave Seasons, Crisol: Theater of Idols, and Fear the Spotlight. Fear the Spotlight has been confirmed for 2024, and more information about the individual projects can be found on their respective websites.
VALORANT Console
Riot's tactical FPS is finally coming to Xbox and PlayStation this year, and players can sign up for the testing phase now, which begins on June 14. The game's content will be identical to the PC version, right down to the paid skins, but the control scheme has been modified for controllers, with a new "focus mode" that allows for accurate hip-fire shooting.
Skate Console Playtesting
- EA has confirmed that console playtesting for the long-awaited fourth Skate game will begin in the fall of 2024, and registration is now open.
