Larian Studios CEO Sven Vincke has admitted that the team behind Baldur’s Gate 3 had to do “a bit of crunch” after the developer encountered issues that it “didn't foresee."

The details:

  • During a Q&A session at the Digital Dragons conference (via Games Radar), Vicnke confirmed that Larian had gone through crunch periods, adding that while it was "certainly less on BG3 than we did in the past,” it would be a lie to deny that it engaged in the divisive practice. "We didn't overly crunch," Vincke said. "but we did have to do a bit of crunch. And I think, to be honest, you will always have a little bit when you're trying to finish something, especially when there's so much complexity that needs to be brought together."

  • The CEO also added that employees who worked overtime were fully compensated, that they would not work after 8 pm in most cases, and that it was "very, very, very rare" for employees to work on weekends.

  • Crunch is a controversial issue in the gaming industry, with major studios such as Rockstar and CD Projekt Red reportedly forcing staff to work up to 80 hours a week to meet tight deadlines in the past. The additional working hours frequently result in a poor work-life balance, which causes problems in employees' personal lives.
