Free-to-play tactical FPS World War 3 has been taken offline

World War 3 has been shut down permanently, ending eight years of life for the free-to-play multiplayer tactical shooter from developers New Generation Games and Wishlist Games. The servers went offline on August 3, 2026, two months after the studio announced the closure in a Steam post, citing an unspecified "difficult decision" to end support for the title.

• World War 3 entered Steam Early Access in 2018 and received a full launch in 2022. The game peaked at just under 12,000 concurrent players at launch, but struggled to sustain an audience in the years that followed. For nearly two years before its closure, the game rarely broke 300 concurrent players, and in its final hours it was barely reaching double digits.
• The announcement was posted to the game's Steam page on June 3, giving players two months' notice. The message read: "After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to end support for the game and shut down its servers." The team thanked the community for years of support, feedback, and content creation.
• Reactions in the Steam comments were mixed. Some mourned the game's unfulfilled potential, noting it had solid gameplay ideas that were never fully delivered. Others felt the game had already been dead for years. One player wrote: "Undelivered patches killed the game. I feel bad for it. Still, thank you for keeping it a little bit longer alive."
• The closure arrives during a period of heightened debate around the Stop Killing Games movement, which argues that developers have a responsibility to keep online-only games accessible even after official support ends. World War 3 will not receive an offline mode.
