nDreams, the UK-based VR developer behind Synapse and Far Cry VR, has confirmed that it is undergoing a round of layoffs that could result in the departure of up to 17.5% of its workforce.

The details:

  • In a statement to Game Developer, Studio CEO Patrick O'Luanaigh confirmed the restructuring and attributed the layoffs to a "challenging VR games market." O'Luanaigh also stated that the cuts would affect employees at all levels, including senior leadership. "We are working tirelessly to support our team with the respect and care they deserve throughout this challenging process, including all our efforts to comprehensively assist those whose positions may be impacted to move into new roles within nDreams or elsewhere," the CEO said. "Having been fully-focused on VR development since 2013, we have inevitably faced many challenges in building a modest independent studio into a world-leading VR game developer working to push both the technology and the market forward. These necessary considerations of losing valued team members are the most difficult yet, but our belief in XR gaming is undimmed."

  • It has been stated that the cuts will not have an impact on the development of its upcoming titles Frenzies and Vendetta Forever. O'Luanaigh also added that he believes the restructuring will allow it to "better serve current and future audiences in creating medium-defining titles for years to come."

  • nDreams was founded in 2006 and made its VR gaming debut in 2013 with its tech demo "SkyDIEving." Since then, it has expanded to over 250 employees across four teams: nDreams Studio, Orbital, Near Light, and Elevation, and was acquired by Swedish conglomerate Aonic for $110 million USD in November 2023.
