Bungie and NetEase have announced Destiny: Rising, a new free-to-play mobile shooter with a closed alpha test set to begin next month.

The details:

  • Destiny: Rising will be a free-to-play release for Android and iOS that is being developed and published by NetEase, with Destiny providing the license to the sci-fi IP. The game will take place in an alternate timeline, "exploring a narrative in the post-Dark Age era." "With the help of legendary Iron Lords, humanity has broken free the shackles of tyranny and began to rally together against the alien forces intent on its extinction,” the developer shared. “Amidst the chaos of this early age for The City, a new generation of Lightbearers, resurrected by mysterious entities known as Ghosts, set out to restore humanity's prominence and secure its future."

  • The game will include PvE co-op and PvP competitive modes similar to previous entries in the franchise, such as six-player strikes and campaign missions, but NetEase promises that some modes will be "all-new."

  • Instead of a single playable guardian, Rising will have a "diverse roster" of playable characters that includes some "familiar faces" with different in-game abilities. Another difference from previous Destiny games is that players will be able to play from both first and third-person perspectives.

  • While Destiny: Rising has no set release date, pre-registration is now open for the closed alpha test, which is set to begin on November 1.

  • NetEase announced its partnership with Bungie in 2018, with reports of a Destiny mobile game surfacing in 2022, claiming that it had been in development for roughly two years at the time.
