Mass Effect veteran Mac Walters announces AAA studio, Worlds Untold, will "pause operations"
Mac Walters, best known for his writing and production work on the original Mass Effect trilogy, has announced that his studio Worlds Untold will “pause operations” as it attempts to find a new business partner.
The details:
Walters announced the "pause" in operations on the studio's LinkedIn page, stating that it is looking for a "new partner to help bring our vision to life." During the search, its current staff will be allowed to look for employment elsewhere, and the company has offered to help those affected find work. “It’s hard to find the right words for this, but I wanted to share that we’ve made the very difficult decision to pause operations at Worlds Untold while we search for a new partner to help bring our vision to life,” the statement reads. “This was not a decision we made lightly—it’s been a deeply personal journey, and we’re all so proud of everything this team has built together.”
Worlds Untold was founded in late 2023 following Walters' departure from BioWare earlier that year after almost two decades, with a fully remote structure. The developer was backed by NetEase, one of China's largest gaming companies, and was working on a "AAA action-adventure game with an emphasis on narrative" featuring an entirely new IP.
Walters' announcement comes just a day after Casey Hudson, another former BioWare veteran, confirmed that his studio, Humanoid Origin, would be closing after just three years due to financial issues. Similar to Worlds Untold, the studio was working on a new AAA sci-fi IP with a "character-driven narrative" before its shuttering.
