Square Enix announces new business plan including AAA multi-platform strategy, cancels multiple projects
Square Enix has revealed its new three-year business plan, which includes a shift to a multi-platform strategy for future AAA releases, with the possibility of re-releasing previous exclusives on other systems.
The details:
The publisher detailed the plan in its latest financial report, which covers the period until March 31, 2027, with the goal of achieving long-term growth. Square's four pillars include "strengthening customer contact points," which involves "aggressively pursuing a multiplatform strategy that includes Nintendo platforms, PlayStation, Xbox, and PCs." The plan also specifies a focus on "major franchises and AAA titles, including catalog titles."
The most notable examples of Square's platform exclusive releases are Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth, as well as Final Fantasy XVI, all of which were released on PS5. Although FF7 Remake has been released on PC, with an FFXVI port in the works, there has been no mention of potential releases on Xbox or Nintendo's Switch successor.
Square also confirmed in the report that it has canceled a number of projects, resulting in losses of 22,087 million JPY (~$141 million USD), which contributed to a 70% drop in profits from the previous year. The company claims that the cancellations are due to the projects being "incompatible with the Group's revised approach to the development of HD games," which includes multi-platform releases and stronger internal development practices.
