Larian Studios has announced that a 100-mod limit will be implemented for console players due to reports of poor technical performance until a fix is available.

The details:

  • As announced in a post on its website, Larian has implemented a new hotfix that prevents console players from having more than 100 mods active at the same time. Those with existing saves that exceed the limit will also be unable to load them "for the time being," though this can be avoided by loading the save on PC via cross-save, disabling some mods, and then loading it on console.

  • Larian explained that "consoles can only juggle so many files at once," unlike PCs, which has resulted in players with over 100 mods reporting numerous stability issues such as "slow loading times or even game crashes." “Unlike PC, consoles can only juggle so many files at once. The more mods you have installed, the quicker this file limit is reached,” the studio explained. “While we recommend only installing the mods you know you’ll definitely continue playing with, to maximise stability, we’re introducing a 100-mod limit for console platforms.”

  • For those without a PC, 100+ mod save files will be able to be restored on consoles "soon" when a follow-up patch is released. It's possible that players will still need to disable mods, which Larian warns may cause problems depending on what a mod has changed or added to the game.

  • Official modding support for console games has grown in popularity over the last decade, with Bethesda's Skyrim and Fallout being two of the largest examples of AAA mod integration. Notably, Bethesda also implemented storage limits of 2GB and 10GB for mods, respectively, due to hardware limitations that many PC users are unlikely to encounter.
