Scopely is looking for a Director of Engineering to join an unannounced project within our MAX Division! We are in the development stages on one of our new unannounced projects, and are looking for passionate game makers to collaborate, get in early and make their mark on this exciting venture!

What You Will Do

Reporting to the General Manager, the Director of Engineering will be responsible for managing the engineering team on an new/unannounced game entering pre-production. A successful candidate will have both experience in technical direction as well as excellent communication and team building skills. Strong knowledge of various game technologies for both client and server, the successful candidate will also be responsible for maintaining technical standards.

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining technical ownership of the project. Balance personal experience with leveraging technical specialists to aid in decision-making, risk management, and oversight of the entire engineering team

  • Be hands-on while the team is small and get your hands dirty whenever the team needs additional support

  • Building a team of engineers for a new project. Lead hiring efforts, technical evaluation, and maintenance of healthy team structure and composition

  • Mentorship and growth of engineering staff. Focus on providing technical coaching, skill development, and knowledge sharing within the team

  • Advocating and championing technical quality and processes. Identifying, documenting, and promoting best practices while balancing productivity with continuous quality

  • Facilitating cross-discipline team collaboration. Work with other discipline leadership to build processes and team culture that foster a healthy and efficient team

What We Are Looking For

  • General

    • 5+ years of engineering team management experience including:

    • Managing larger engineering teams (10+ engineers)

    • Working with and managing a remote/distributed team

    • Development and maintenance of engineering best practices and standards

    • Managing multiple concurrent initiatives and features simultaneously

    • Growing a development team within a large organization

    • Vetting new engineer candidates for technical and cultural fit

    • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Able to communicate effectively both upward and downward to technical and non-technical disciplines

    • Experience managing engineering teams and requirements through the full product cycle from prototype to production

  • Technical

    • Strong skills with Unity Engine and C#

    • UI development

    • Asset bundles/addressables

    • Optimization, memory management and performance

  • Mobile/live/F2P games experience

    • Constraints and optimizations for mobile devices

    • iOS/Android development

    • IAP systems

  • Knowledge of client/server architecture

    • Networking APIs (REST/HTTP)

    • Multiplayer feature development

    • Liveops systems

    • Databases/caching

    • Data analytics/SQL

  • Experience monitoring/maintaining technical quality

    • Code reviews & QA processes and tools

    • TDD/Unit testing

    • Crash/ANR monitoring/reporting

  • Experience evaluating and utilizing 3rd party tools/SDKs within Unity

  • Familiarity with CI/CD and build systems/pipelines

For candidates in CA, CO, NJ, NY and WA, the annual salary range is $180,000 - $275,000, plus equity, bonus and benefits including healthcare benefits, retirement benefits, pet insurance, paid holidays, paid Scopely free days, and unlimited paid time-off.
