Job Description

Gameloft Montreal is seeking a new Lead 3D Character Artist to join the team working on DISNEY DREAMLIGHT VALLEY, a brand-new cross-platform hybrid life-sim/adventure game already in early access! Role Description

  • Providing strong leadership and thoughtful direction to a team of 3D Character Artists.

  • Creating (Sculpt, Model, UV, texture, and create materials) high-quality stylized characters and creatures.

  • Delivering excellent translations of 2D concepts into 3D characters while considering game design constraints and respecting a strong artistic direction

  • Working closely with the Art Director to ensure the visual target is always exceeded and stylistically consistent

  • Providing creative and technical direction to character artists, and being an active motivator in team discussions, critiques, and reviews

  • Actively participating in technical and aesthetic problem-solving discussions for the entire project

  • Coordinating with tools and technology teams to develop necessary solutions to create the best characters possible

  • Reviewing assets to make certain that they satisfy their intended design and are ready for rigging and animation

  • Collaborating with other disciplines such as Design, Concept Art, Animation, Tech Art, and VFX to ensure that characters are fully realized

  • Verifying the quality of assets in the game, and making improvements where necessary to fit technical constraints, performance targets, and artistic direction

  • Supervising bug distribution and verifying bug fixes

  • Creating and maintaining a transparent and reliable schedule that is well-coordinated with production

  • Ensuring the timely completion of assets that meet style requirements and desired quality standards

  • Mentoring 3D Character Artists by providing creative and technical training, guidance, and feedback

  • Documenting and communicating workflow and best practices to support consistency across the Character Art Team

Qualifications

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • High-quality portfolio of gamedev-relevant 3D Character Art, preferably with an emphasis on stylization.

  • Able to interpret and follow concepts and reference material to create clean, detailed, and accurate 3D Character models.

  • An excellent understanding of game mechanics related to characters, objects, and environments.

  • Understanding of technical constraints for cross-platform production.

  • Experience integrating 3D assets into industry-leading game engines such as Unity or Unreal. (Unity experience is a desired plus.)

  • Experience with Marmoset Toolbag and 3D-Coat.

  • High proficiency in modeling programs such as 3ds Max, Maya, Blender, ZBrush, and texture/material authoring tools such as Photoshop and Substance 3D.

  • Excellent high and low poly modeling skills, as well as demonstrable skill with texture and shaders creation within a PBR pipeline Attention to detail for both aesthetic and technical quality.

  • Deep knowledge of human and animal anatomy.

  • Mastery of form, shape, structure, and silhouette in regard to modeling.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively coordinate with every department of a game development team.

  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills, with a focus on achieving results and driving projects forward.

  • Know when to delegate or do it yourself using your production knowledge.

  • Strong organizational, supervisory, and mentoring skills.

  • Commitment to the project and a desire to find the best possible way of inspiring others.

  • Effective time management skills and ability to meet deadlines.

  • Educated on the latest trends, coupled with a strong perspective on how they relate to our current and future projects
