We are seeking a Principal Tools Engineer to help build development support and content creation tools to empower and supercharge the productivity of our development team. Location flexible:

This role is anticipated to be a hybrid work position, with some work on-site and some work-from-home. The potential home studio for this role is Albany, NY, or Irvine, CA.

We need help with

  • Drive conversations with design, art, engineering, and audio to define tool workflows and feature sets.

  • Implement new tools and improve existing ones that meet the project’s needs.

  • Furthering the efficiency, maintainability, and scalability of the tools and technology developed by the team.

  • Educating and mentoring junior members of the engineering organization on best practices regarding software and tools development.

  • Advising leadership of opportunities and risks across tools development and the larger project.

  • Evaluating internal/external technology and tools with the goal of sourcing and integrating technology that meets project requirements and goals.

  • Authoring documentation and communicating best practices and technical constraints of the engine and tools stack to team members.

  • Partnering with technical leadership and senior engineers across the organization to promote cross-team shared code initiatives and open/internal source contributions.

  • Championing Blizzard’s core values.

What you are good at

  • Making tools for shipped AAA games

  • Writing tools that support multiple gaming platforms.

  • Building consensus across engineers as well as other disciplines regarding the vision and direction of large-scale tooling and workflow initiatives.

  • Writing fluent C++ code with advanced knowledge of both historical patterns and modern language features.

  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills.

  • Authoring tools and development workflows with a service-oriented attitude.

Extra awesome points for

  • B.S. (or higher) degree in Computer Science or equivalent.

  • Experience with Unity, Unreal, or other development engines.

  • Experience with performance analysis and code optimization.

  • Experience with Relational Databases (SQL) or Document stores (NoSQL).

  • Experience with modern source control systems, such as Subversion, Git, or Perforce.

In the U.S., the standard base pay range for this role is $146,000.00 - $270,004.00 Annual. This base pay range is for the U.S. and is not applicable to locations outside of the U.S. Actual amounts will vary depending on experience, performance and location. In addition to a competitive base pay, employees in this role may be eligible for incentive compensation. Incentive compensation is not guaranteed.
