Job Description

As an Assistant Level Design Director at Ubi Québec, you'll help plan a content-rich world, and guide a team of level designers in bringing its quests and locations to life. As the connection between the design vision and your team members, you clearly communicate information that allows each one to grasp the intended experience you’re collectively trying to achieve.

Throughout production, your team can rely on your technical and creative expertise to navigate the level design process – and overcome any obstacles that come their way. While your designers focus on their areas of ownership, you pay attention to the larger picture. You ensure that every mission and place seamlessly combine to create an engaging journey for players to discover.

What you’ll do

  • Creativity: being able to use constraints as a motor of creation
  • Adaptation: being able to cope with change and find appropriate solutions.
  • Communication: be able to communicate guidelines to their team and support them in this regard.
  • Versatile: to be able to go from a period of debugging to a period of conception, to go from quest to creation of terrain.
  • Analysis: to be able to analyze the work of a level designer and make it "retro design" in order to identify his initial intentions.
  • Follow design documentation to create levels aligned with the creative, artistic, and design visions.
  • Brainstorm design ideas and present them to interdependent teams (conceptualize and communicate engaging gameplay experiences).
  • Participate in prototyping your area (build rough map and greyblock).

Vision and People Management

  • Collaborate with members of the management team to develop the overall vision and help define the gaming experience.
  • Work with development teams to define goals that will deliver the vision of the creative direction of the project.
  • In design, collaborate with its business director to carry out research, suggestions and prototypes to propose and substantiate recipes and benchmarks.
  • In Production, ensure that the teams understand the vision and the defined qualitative criteria and review the results in the game in order to give feedback and guide the teams in achieving the desired quality objectives.
  • Work in collaboration with the management team and development teams to establish priorities and the feasibility of deliverables and adjust expectations as needed.
  • Support problem solving and debug prioritization in collaboration with the team and the various stakeholders.
  • Stay on the cutting edge of the latest developments in the industry, both technical and content levels, to encourage pipeline improvement, productivity and content quality.
  • Mentor the employees under their responsibility
  • Meet with employees under their responsibility regularly to give them feedback and help them progress
  • Participate in the recruitment of new members of the team and ensure the integration of new employees
  • Develop a culture of sharing and push for continuous improvement within its trade community
  • Address conflict situations and behavioral issues by seeking support from the HR team or the team's production manager as needed
  • Write the annual report and the end-of-project report of the employees under their responsibility and help them identify their growth path
  • Help create a healthy, inclusive and positive work environment and escalate issues that could affect employees or the project as needed.

Qualifications

What you bring

  • A college diploma in Game Design or equivalent (undergraduate degree an asset)
  • At least 5 years of experience in the video game industry or other relevant experience + 2 years of leadership
  • Knowledge of game engines (e.g. Unity or Unreal) & their limitations, 2D art tools (e.g. Photoshop), and 3D software (e.g. 3DS Max, Maya, or ZBrush)
  • A highly collaborative, innovative, creative, and empathetic spirit
  • Critical thinking, curiosity, resourcefulness, and plenty of flexibility
  • Excellent problem-solving, organizational, communication, interpersonal, presentation, and mentorship skills
  • Ability to accept feedback and adapt to it
