Rockstar Games is on the lookout for talented Animators who possess a passion for animation and performance capture. Successful candidates will be involved in prepping and running our performance capture shoots, working closely with directors and actors to craft our cinematics and in-game animation. They will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy and usability of all animation captured in this way.

This is a full-time permanent position based out of Rockstar’s unique game development studio in the heart of New York City.


  • We are integral to the planning and direction of performance capture shoots using our mocap facilities to create content for our games.

  • We collaborate with performance directors and actors to craft stunning cinematics and ground-breaking animation systems.

  • We ensure our production teams are fully briefed on all animation requirements ahead of our performance capture shoots.

  • We work with the global animation and design teams to create unique player experiences.


  • Pre-production investigation of all technical animation needs for each mocap request.

  • Use animation knowledge to assist production with shoot scheduling and casting.

  • Ensure performance directors are fully briefed on all technical requirements of a shot.

  • Working with performers, create animation that is responsive, cinematic and fit for purpose.

  • Work closely with the design team to create immersive cinematic and in-game experiences.

  • Post-shoot animation documentation and dissemination of information to the global animation team.

  • Help to improve animation production pipelines.

  • On set presence required at our mocap facility for all projects, as needed.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Art/Animation or equivalent experience.

  • Outstanding demo reel.

  • Minimum 4 years of experience animating video games.


  • Exceptional skill in animating the human figure to create realistic character animations.

  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work closely with Performance Directors, Producers, Artists, Actors, Designers and Programmers.

  • Experience working with actors and on motion capture stages.

  • Strong understanding of development issues in getting animation into a game.

  • Positive, solution-orientated individual, with deep-rooted interest in films and video games.

  • Bring innovation and resolution to technical problems and challenges throughout production.

  • Advanced knowledge of MotionBuilder and motion capture.

  • Professional experience developing third person action games.

  • Experience of film editing, lighting or VFX.

  • Practical knowledge of state machines and motion trees.

The pay range for this position in New York City at the start of employment is expected to be between the range below* per year. However, base pay offered is based on market location, and may vary further depending on individualized factors for job candidates, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to those same considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a bonus and/or equity awards, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits. If hired, employee will be in an "at-will position" and the company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
