The Roblox Education team is looking for an experienced game designer to support relationships with the many outstanding educational organizations who are building educational experiences on Roblox. The Senior Game Designer on our Education team will build rapport with educational organizations, educators, educational developers, families, and students to develop high quality educational experiences on Roblox.

As the Senior Game Designer on the Education Team, you will work with Roblox’s education partners, to design experiences that are engaging, fun, and truly educational. As our education partners and developers navigate translating learning objectives into compelling game and experience designs, you’ll review and iterate alongside their learning science and game design teams. As curriculum and instructional designers consider learning standards and objectives for educational experiences, you’ll help translate game mechanics and themes that resonate with the Roblox community into core loops that couple learning and play. You’ll help our partners through concepting, paper prototyping, iterating with Roblox Studio, think aloud testing, and providing feedback as educational developers implement their designs.

You Are

  • Experienced in designing serious games. You’ve worked on projects designing serious games.
  • Analytical about games. You have a good understanding of a broad variety of games and types of games. When someone suggests a new game feature, you can reference a previous game that tried it and explain why it did or didn’t work. This requires a diversity of gaming experience that covers well-known and more obscure games.
  • Familiar with tools such as Roblox Studio. Education partners develop with Roblox Studio. Game Designers are not expected to create complex experiences or systems on their own, but familiarity and experience with the involved steps is useful. You will work with Roblox Studio and quickly learn your way around.
  • A strong team member. You communicate effectively in meetings and documentation. You surface potential problems with designs and implementation alongside possible solutions
  • Experienced at finding creative solutions to gameplay problems. You have been involved in multiple game development projects and have worked on work for hire contracts. Through this experience, you developed familiarity with common problems in game design and how to solve them. You faced tough questions and came up with creative solutions.
  • Someone who enjoys working with data. You can get into the weeds of game systems and help teams balance them and you’re comfortable interacting with playtest feedback/data to inform design iterations.
  • Excited about working with educational partners on serious games. Our partners’ projects are not purely striving for entertainment. While our partners strive to blend learning and fun, and to implement designs and mechanics that make the two goals mutually reinforcing, the learning objectives remain front and center in their design considerations. We help our partners engage, motivate, and teach through gameplay.

You Will

  • Support full design and development with our education partners’ teams. You’ll participate in initial ideation, concept development, design documentation creation and reviews, and offer guidance throughout the full life cycle of each partner’s project.
  • Prototype ideas. Get hands-on in Roblox studio and rapidly prototype different ideas alongside our partners’ teams. You may lead or observe play testing with students as developers look to see evidence of learning and understand student play patterns.
  • Delve into the details of learning and play data. Help our partners understand how their experiences are resonating with students and educators by testing, analyzing, and iterating with our partners’ teams.
  • Support potential RCF partners in crafting proposals. Support our potential Roblox Community Fund grantees in creating proposals and building relationships with developers.
