PocketGamer.fr is the French spin-off of Pocket Gamer, the market leading mobile games website. It delivers reviews, features, guides, tips and news for French-language mobile and handheld gamers. This vacancy is a chance for a French-speaking freelance writer/site editor to work from home keeping the site populated with content.

Reporting to the senior management team, you will implement the content plan (roughly 10 stories per week) under your own supervision with almost complete discretion to create the site you think the French mobile gaming scene needs. The post frequency is relatively light, requiring only two or three hours of contribution per day.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Plan and write daily content for the site, based on good SEO practices with an eye to growing traffic.
  • Hit daily content targets set by the company and ensure all content appears smoothly and in line with agreed schedules and quality.
  • Take content from Pocket Gamer’s English-language sites and translate into French for the French audience as needed.
  • You’ll ensure efficient communication between yourself and other parts of the Steel Media and Pocket Gamer team, no matter how remote, using tools such as email and Skype. These will likely be in both English and French so fluent knowledge of both is needed.
  • Ensure the site’s community (including its Facebook and Twitter followers) are well maintained with links to the daily content.
  • Be an ambassador for our Pocket Gamer brand and for Steel Media, representing us in the French-speaking world if necessary.
  • You'll communicate with the ads team and the site’s publisher to share (and, if necessary, implement) ads/sponsorship opportunities.
  • From time to time you may also be required to write marketing content to promote other parts of the Steel Media/Pocket Gamer business (for instance, write articles on PG.fr about Steel Media’s conferences)

Due to working remotely - see requirements above - you will need to be comfortable being out of an office setting (it doesn't suit everyone) and be able to communicate and regularly report to your line-manager via Skype and other online systems.

Qualifications and Skills

Are you a native French speaker? A good writer and reviewer with a perfect turn of phrase? A talented online editor with a nose for what gamers want to read about? Are you experienced and unflappable, a safe pair of hands for the daily running of a website? PocketGamer.fr could be for you! What we require…

  • 1+ years’ editorial experience
  • Native/fluent French speaker
  • English language skills, enough to be able to communicate with the international team and translate content into French from Steel Media’s English sites if necessary
  • Proven track record of editing a site and using a CMS
  • Highly organised
  • An understanding of the requirements of good gaming news, reviews and features
  • Writing skills – able to show examples of excellent online French content
  • Very stable internet connection
  • A love of mobile gaming
  • Able to work from home – ideally living in France/Europe
  • Basic social media skills
  • A decent list of PR contacts in the mobile/handheld gaming world would be nice, or at least a passing knowledge of the sector

Benefits

  • What we pay will depend on experience (assuming 10 stories uploaded per week)
  • The role is initially offered on a contract basis, with an invoice at the end of each month.
  • The role will be performed remotely and therefore we will accept applications from anywhere.
  • We are open to flexible working hours, as long as daily activity levels are kept up.
  • There'll be an initial three-month trial period.
