PerBlue is looking for an experienced and highly motivated Art Manager to oversee our talented and multidisciplinary art team. We’re a quickly growing independent studio whose free-to-play mid-core mobile games have been played by millions of people around the world, including the award-winning Disney Heroes: Battle Mode.

Our cross-functional and collaborative team has experience from across the videogame industry. We are a Remote First company headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin, with team members based remotely around the United States for an unmatched quality of life and work.

What’s this position about?

You’ll manage team members across the whole of an art department, including folks in 2D/3D, VFX, SFX, writing, and producer roles. You nurture, mentor and guide the team, ensuring career growth and their well-being. You should be a great communicator, extremely organized, and very goal-oriented. You excel in highly cross-functional and dynamic environments and are willing to jump in to ensure the success of your team as a whole. You also have an interest or experience in art, though the main focus is on the people.

This is a highly collaborative role that works closely with our studio leadership and department leads. You will be one of the main advocates for the art department as a whole and will be deeply involved in helping shape and build the art department. You’ll work closely with the team’s Art Leads to manage the professional growth and well-being of each staff member and their direct reports by supporting and empowering them to produce great work in their games and fostering a culture of collaboration, open dialogue, and workload sustainability.

You will provide mentorship, support, and conduct performance reviews and work closely with the studio Operations Manager and COO. Lastly, you will assist the Creative Producers in managing external vendors and ensuring they produce high-quality work on time and for reasonable costs.

Your Experience

  • 5+ years of video game studio creative team leadership experience (mobile and free to play preferred)
  • Prior art management roles with a track record of managing multidisciplinary internal art teams including 1:1s, performance reviews and helping artists manage their career development.
  • Your experience defining and enacting strategic department planning, including understanding the short and long-term needs of projects, has provided strategies for team staffing, training, and development.
  • You’ve ensured proper resourcing by balancing art team schedules and priorities

  • You’re a superb communicator, able to effectively provide constructive feedback and effectively communicate with both your team members and management.
  • You work directly with other studio department leads, ensuring a collaborative and productive environment.
  • Proactive and able to take ownership of processes, projects, and issues.
  • Ability to lead, mentor, manage and direct to perform managerial duties.
  • Strong understanding of personnel challenges.
  • Ego-free. Positive and collaborative.

Other skills to highlight in your application

  • Task management/organizational tools such as Airtable, Jira, and Shotgrid.
  • 2D and 3D art asset production pipelines and software tools, and have direct experience managing those pipelines.
